UTwente does Rich Speech Retrieval at MediaEval 2011

    Get PDF
This paper describes the participation of the University of Twente team at the Rich Text Retrieval Task of the Media Eval Benchmark Initiative 2011. The goal of the task is to find entry points of relevant parts of videos to reduce the browsing effort of searchers. This is our first participation, therefore our main focus is to create a baseline system which can be improved in the future. We experiment with different evidence sources (ASR and meta data) together with a basic score combination function. We also experiment with different entry points relative to the segments found by the contained evidence

In this report we summarize our methods and results for the search tasks in\ud TRECVID 2007. We employ two different kinds of search: purely ASR based and\ud purely concept based search. However, there is not significant difference of the\ud performance of the two systems. Using neighboring shots for the combination of\ud two concepts seems to be beneficial. General preprocessing of queries increased\ud the performance and choosing detector sources helped. However, for all automatic\ud search components we need to perform further investigations

When worry about climate change leads to climate action:How values, worry and personal responsibility relate to various climate actions

    Get PDF
The IPCC's report on Global Warming of 1.5°C positioned climate change as one of the most worrying issues mankind has ever faced. Although many people worry about climate change, there is still much unknown about the origins and outcomes of worry about climate change; particularly, whether and how it can motivate specific and personal climate actions. The current paper investigates this critical relationship with data from the European Social Survey Round 8 (44,387 respondents from 23 countries). As expected, the more individuals worried about climate change, the more likely they were to take and support climate action. Yet, the process through which this association occurred differed between actions. Specifically, worry was both directly and indirectly, via feelings of personal responsibility to reduce climate change, associated with climate policy support; whereas worry was mostly indirectly associated with personal climate mitigation behaviours, via personal responsibility. In addition, worry about climate change appears partly rooted in biospheric values (i.e., caring about nature and the environment), and biospheric values were also clearly, directly and positively related to personal climate mitigation behaviours. The relationships were highly consistent across countries but varied somewhat in size. The results show how generic feelings about climate change can directly and indirectly affect both climate policy support and personal climate mitigation behaviours, thereby providing critical insights for science and policy making

Browsing and Searching the Spoken Words of Buchenwald Survivors

The ‘Buchenwald’ project is the successor of the ‘Radio Oranje’ project that aimed at the transformation of a set of World War II related mono-media documents –speeches of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina, textual transcripts of the speeches, and a database of WWII related photographs– to an attractive online multimedia presentation of the Queen’s speeches with keyword search functionality [6, 3]. The ‘Buchenwald’ project links up and extends the ‘Radio Oranje’ approach. The goal in the project was to develop a Dutch multimedia information portal on World War II concentration camp Buchenwald1. The portal holds both textual information sources and a video collection of testimonies from 38 Dutch camp survivors with durations between a half and two and a half hours. For each interview, an elaborate description, a speaker profile and a short summary are available

A historical and interdisciplinary approach provides specific information on traditional practices such as health care and illness, a historical fact that currently prevails contributing to nursing discipline, which belongs to its object of study. Interpreting the cosmovision as an articulated set of ideological systems for the knowledge and understanding of traditional care, under the historical method and hermeneutical methodology, interpretative paradigm based on the collection of historical, philological, philosophical, ethnographic data, among others, ratifies the interpretation And understanding of the underlying knowledge of the cosmovision of traditional practices such as health care and disease in pre-Hispanic and present indigenous societies. The concept posed by Wilhelm Dhilthey and contextualized for Mesoamerican studies by Johanna Broda and López Austin, is thought to be important for identifying, knowing and understanding traditional practices. The concept of cosmovision for the nursing discipline is useful if it is studied as a core of products that identify an articulated set of ideological systems such as traditional practices, their ideological field, origin, characteristics, social dynamics, conception of man, Disease and of course, its care in its humanist dimension.A abordagem histórica e interdisciplinar fornece informações específicas sobre as práticas tradicionais, tais como cuidados de saúde e doença fato histórico atualmente contribuindo para a disciplina de enfermagem, que de seu assunto pertence prevalecentes. Easy listening: spoken document retrieval in CHoral

    Get PDF
Given the enormous backlog at audiovisual archives and the generally global level of item description, collection disclosure and item access are both at risk. At the same time, archival practice is seeking to evolve from the analogue to the digital world. CHoral investigates the role automatic annotation and search technology can play in improving disclosure and access of digitized spoken word collections during and after this transfer. The core business of the CHoral project is to design and build technology for spoken document retrieval for heritage collections. In this paper, we will argue that in addition to solving technological issues, closer attention is needed for the work-flow and daily practice at audiovisual archives on the one hand, and the state-of-the-art in technology on the other. Analysis of the interplay is needed to ensure that new developments are mutually beneficial and that continuing cooperation can indeed bring envisioned advancements. \u
